Drink Deeply

I've been spending time in Isaiah again, and this time I landed on chapter twelve, verse three: "With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation."

Oh, how I love this word picture!  It makes me think of the deep satisfaction you get when you take a long, cool drink after you've been outside in the hot sun.  Your throat is parched, your mouth gritty it is so dry.  Someone hands you a glass of water or lemonade and you drink long and deep, quenching that terrible thirst.

When Isaiah wrote these words in chapter twelve, he had just spent the previous chapters describing how Israel would be destroyed by Assyria.  They would be stripped of everything - their homes, their families, their freedom -  and only a remnant would remain.  But then God would destroy Assyria and bring forth a savior -- Jesus -- to redeem not only Israel, but all the world.  And when He comes, He will bring a well of salvation, springing forth in a fountain of hope and grace.

That day has come!  Salvation is here!  And we are invited to sit by the fountain, fill our cup and drink deeply of that salvation!  Oh, glorious refreshment for many a weary soul.  Come, drink!  "Taste and see that the Lord is good!" (Psalm 34:8)
